MVHR, positive input, and extract-only: which system for which house?
Good ventilation keeps indoor air fresh, prevents condensation and mould, and reduces energy waste. UK Building Regulations Part F sets minimum ventilation rates for all homes. MVHR systems recover up to 90% of heat from stale air, PIV systems push fresh air in from the loft, and extract-only fans pull stale air out. The right choice depends on your house type, budget, and how airtight your home is.
Why Ventilation Matters
UK homes are being insulated and air-sealed to save energy, but without adequate ventilation, indoor air quality suffers. Poor ventilation leads to condensation on windows, mould growth on walls, and a buildup of indoor pollutants. Building Regulations Part F requires all UK homes to provide continuous background ventilation plus intermittent extract ventilation in kitchens and bathrooms.
Modern mechanical ventilation systems (like MVHR) can provide fresh air while recovering heat from stale air, cutting heating bills. Older homes with natural ventilation (trickle vents, airbricks) may need upgrading when insulation is improved. This site explains the options with evidence from Building Regs, Energy Saving Trust guidance, and real-world installation costs.
